In May, 2008, I had the honor and privilege of learning Jikiden Reiki from it's founder, Tadao Yamaguchi Sensei of Kyoto, Japan.  Please allow me to share my story, which I hope will inspire you to also learn Jikiden Reiki!

Traditional Usui Reiki

The lineage of Traditional Usui Reiki started with the founder, Dr. Usui, in 1923. He taught Dr. Hayashi, who in turn taught Mrs. Takata, who brought Reiki to Hawaii and mainland USA in the mid 1930's. Those who follow her lineage refer to their practice as 'Traditional Usui'. I have practiced Traditional Usui Reiki (hereinafter Western Reiki) for thirteen years with wonder and success.  I feel blessed with the quality of my training, which I received in Germany from Arjava Petter and his wife, Bhakti.  Reiki transformed my health and spiritual consciousness in many ways, enabling me to help many, many other people along the way. During training, Arjava told us he was studying Jikiden Reiki in Japan (hereinafter Eastern Reiki) with the founders, Chiyoko and Tadao Yamaguchi.  He generously gave us one of the Shoden (Level One) attunements. It was spectacular! Still, it was five years before I began my journey with Jikiden.

Healing the physical body

While I found Western Reiki wonderful and fulfilling for healing at all levels, I craved to learn more about specific healing for the physical body. I prayed for help learning how to do that!  Within a week a newsletter landed in my mailbox from Jikiden Reiki. It included information on Shoden and Okuden (Levels I and II) ... to be held one hour from my home ... the coming weekend! Hmm! I have to laugh at the synchronicity ~ because I later discovered that the focus of Jikiden Reiki is... healing at the physical level!  The timing was perfect and four days later, I found myself in class.

The Yamaguchi Family and Jikiden Reiki Class

Jikiden Reiki is the lineage beginning with Dr. Usui, the founder of Reiki, who taught Dr. Hayashi, who taught Mrs.ChiyokoYamaguchi. Mrs.Yamaguchi learned Reiki when she was 17 years old, giving Reiki to her son Tadao before he was even born! It wasn't till he went to school that he heard of doctors and medicines, because his mother treated them exclusively with Reiki! No one could be more knowledgeable than Tadao Sensei who has received and practiced Reiki all his life. He presented class in a gentle, unassuming manner, while at the same time projecting professional confidence in the effectiveness of Jikiden Reiki healing. He shared fascinating, previously unknown history; he told us how his family was discovered and projected into the international Reiki scene; and he taught us Reiki techniques and healing symbols that are different and more focused than we've known in the West.

How is 'Jikiden Reiki' different from what we call 'Traditional Usui Reiki' in the West?

Jikiden means 'directly passed down'.  In this case, it refers to the lineage from the founder of Reiki, Dr. Usui, to Dr. Hayashi, to Mrs. Chiyoko Yamaguchi and her son Tadao. Together Chiyoko and Tadao Yamaguchi taught Reiki exactly as she received it from Dr. Hayashi when she was 17 years old.  It hasn't been to the West until now. Nothing was dropped and nothing was added to the system. To learn, one must agree to not change anything about it, to keep it purely passed down.

It's believed that when Mrs. Takata brought Reiki to the USA, she taught the system as she received it from Dr. Hayashi. After her death, her students got together and standardized, 'westernized', the system, based on their collective memory of her classes.  This resulted in what is known as 'Traditional Usui' or 'Western' Reiki.  As Western Reiki spread around the world, it acclimated itself to every culture and belief system it met along the way. Reiki needed to do that, in order for everyone to have Reiki!  But now we're blessed that we can learn Jikiden Reiki too ~ the original, simple and pure Reiki system that focuses like a laser beam at particular physical issues, while also healing from the inside out to ensure the root cause is also healed.

How my Reiki practice has been affected by Jikiden Reiki

The week after Jikiden class, I had seventeen Usui Reiki clients, plus a Reiki Share for my students, and a Usui Reiki I class. There was a lot of opportunity to incorporate my new knowledge and skills! During sessions, every single person sighed deeply a few times and fell soundly asleep.  All remarked afterwards on the intense heat of my hands, and the profound sense of relaxation that they experienced. Those who came for healing on physical problems reported lessened pain and discomfort.  Prior to Jikiden class, I had heat in my hands and good results from sessions.  But this was very different, Reiki seemed so much stronger! I was also more sensitive to what I was feeling in my hands, and knew more about how to evaluate those feelings in order to best help each client.  Sessions that normally ran 60 minutes expanded to 90, the time flying by as I worked in a peaceful, focused manner.  People who schedule sessions once per month scheduled again for the following week.  One long term client raised up on her elbows during her session and looked into my eyes to say, 'Starr, you're amazing!"  To which I replied, smiling, "Seriously, it's Jikiden Reiki that's amazing!"

In summary

Western Reiki has made its way around the globe, helping people enhance their health and sense of well being for seventy years. Jikiden Reiki, pristine and elegant, has enhanced people's health and well being it's own special way for over eighty years!  Both systems are amazing. I recommend learning both, starting with Western Reiki, then specializing with Jikiden. If you're a Western Reiki practitioner already, I hope you'll be as thrilled as I am to add Jikiden to your collection of skills.
