A...is for Accepting Ourselves/Approval  sm_dove_L.gif (378 bytes)

Isn't it funny how some people have an easier time accepting other people than they have accepting themselves?

We might automatically accept that other people know best and that whatever other people say is the way it goes.  If there is a problem in any relationship we have, we might automatically accept fault instead of realizing that others might have played a part in creating these problems.  While accepting blame may defuse the situation and temporarily bring peace, in the long run it perpetuates problems rather than solves them.  The temporary peace comes at too great a price.

Another way we may do ourselves harm is by listening to negative tapes from the past that persist in playing in our heads.  During quiet moments and when thinking about taking a new direction in live, we might hear inner voices telling us we're not good enough, we're not smart enough, we're not strong enough, brave enough, attractive enough...we are just not enough!  These are old tapes, old critical voices from the past, from parents teachers, or any critical authority figure that we may have had when we were younger.  What we need to remember is that these critical figures no longer have any control over us.  These were voices that robbed us of our hope, and they linger in our subconscious playing over and over.  We need to get rid of them, get rid of them once and for all.  Remember, these figures have no power over us any more, no control over us...we are free to be as we wish.

We must never tell ourselves that we are stupid if we can't understand something.  We're never stupid, we just lack information and experience.  It is never our fault if we honestly try and fail.  Some of us make better mechanics than others, some of us make better artists than others, and some of make better cooks than others.  We cannot expect to know or understand everything in this world regardless of how well it is explained - and sometimes we need to understand that the fault lies with the explanation and not with us.  We are only at fault when we say we know and we do not, then we are setting ourselves up for failure.

Life is not a contest, we are all unique in this world and no one is superior to anyone else.  We are all here to live our own lives and learn our own lessons.  We should never compare ourselves to others because in a comparison contest someone has to lose and always there will be those who are greater or lesser than ourselves in any particular area.  Our differences from someone else do not make us any more valuable or any less valuable, it just makes us who we are.  Who we are right now is all we can be with where we are in life.  It is our differences that add spice to life and keep life interesting and what better reason to accept ourselves and give ourselves approval than that!
